By Aaron Barker, Head of Sales

In this article, our Head of Sales, Aaron Barker, breaks down the cost per metre for a sports cover, along with an outline of several design features that can boost the style and functionality of your structure.

IN BRIEF:

  • As a rough guide, sports covers cost approximately $280 per m2 to build.
  • There’s no one-size-fits-all design for shade structures. Every project is unique and the best structure will be one that fits your budget, creates a functional shaded space, and complements the surrounding buildings.
  • There are plenty of design features that can enhance the usability and aesthetics of your structure, such as extended eaves, skylight inserts, or a curved roof.
  • Steelcorp is an experienced sports cover designer for the education sector – we’d be happy to discuss your project and provide an accurate estimate.

How Much Does a Sports Cover Cost?

Shade structures and sports covers can vary from simple to complex. Although every project is unique, it can be helpful at the beginning of your project to have an idea of the costs involved.

As a guide, simple open-sided sports covers and shade structures cost approximately $280 per m2 to build.

If you’re unsure how large your sports cover should be, this sports cover for St Catherine of Siena shades 1,500m2 of sports court area, or two full-sized basketball courts.

Steecorp has plenty of experience designing sports covers for the education sector, and we understand that projects typically need to remain within strict budget limits. Our team would be happy to discuss your individual requirements and provide a more accurate estimate for your project.

Extras to Consider

You might think most sports covers consist of a simple COLORBOND® roof and posts, with not much in the way of customisation.

However, there are several additional extras that can deliver better functionality and enhanced aesthetics for your shade structure.

Dropped or Cantilevered Eaves

Depending on the location, aspect and surrounding environment, you may like to consider dropped eaves. This ‘skirt’ wraps around the structure and can provide additional weather protection increasing the usability of the area. Eaves can also be cantilevered, offering extra depth and giving similar protection from the rain and sun.

Fully Clad Ceiling

Many educational projects specify strict bird-proofing requirements, as birds nesting within open web trusses can create mess and attract vermin. To address this, our sports cover designs can include a fully clad underside to prevent birds from perching and nesting.

Skylight Inserts

Skylights deliver plenty of natural light, creating a bright and enjoyable space. Sports covers can be designed with clear panel inclusions to allow more light into the area, improving the aesthetics of the overall structure and providing better visibility for sports activities.

Curved Roof

A curved roof can present additional fabrication complexities compared to a common gable truss due to the variety of different angles and points of measurement. However – it can certainly add a bold and unmistakable finish to your sports cover design.
